Buratai Reveals Buhari’s Opinion On ‘Operation Positive ID’

Tukur Buratai , Nigeria’s Chief has announced that President Muhammadu Buhari approved ‘operation positive identification’ scheduled to commence today, Friday.

This Buratai said yesterday when he was at the house of representatives committee investigating the operation.

According to him, the planned operation would require that citizens move around with a means of identification.

The operation is scheduled to hold between November 1 and December 23, 2019.

Due to the public outcry, the House of Representatives told the military to suspend the plan while it directed it committee on army to investigate the matter.

However, represented by Usman Muhammed, chief of civil-military affairs at the Nigerian army, at the committee meeting, Buratai said the president and minister of defence are in support of the operation.

He said the operation had already been launched in the northeast in September, adding that it is only being spread to other parts of the country to battle Boko Haram insurgents.

He, however, denied claims that the operation would involve the deployment of troops into communities across the country, adding that it is a “special operation fused into ongoing operations”.

He said it is an intelligence-based operation to intercept insurgents and other “ criminal elements” relocating from the north-east to other parts of the country.

Abdulrazak Namdaz, the committee chairman, expressed reservations over the operation which he said is not within the scope of the army but other security agencies like the police and immigration.
