Kogi Rerun: Thugs Arrested With AK47, Ammunition In Kabba

Suspected gunmen loyal to a political party in the ongoing Kogi West senatorial election have been arrested in a maternity polling unit, Okekoko Ward of Kabba/ Bunu LGA of the state on Saturday.

The thugs were arrested after they prevented voters from casting their votes.

It was gathered that the gunmen were brought in to disrupt the voting process at the unit believed to be the stronghold of the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Dino Melaye.

According to a reliable source, the leader of the thugs, one Mike Olojo, who was alleged to be working for a legislator from the area in the State House of Assembly, was caught with an AK47 and large quantities of ammunition by the eagle eyes of the locals who later handed them over to the police officers manning the polling unit.

When contacted, the State Commissioner of Police Hakeem Busari feigned ignorant of the incident but promised to contact relevant officers for details.

Meanwhile, apart from the hiccup at the mentioned unit, voting went on peaceful in Lokoja and other areas of Kogi West, including Odolu in Kabba, Aiyetoro-Gbedde and demonstration Primary School, Asuta Ward, voting unit of PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan.

At the Ward B Unit 001, Karaworo, near Pararanda, in Lokoja, accreditation began as early as 8 am, after which voting commenced.

While early hours voters’ turnout was impressive, there was voter apathy, as most polling units witnessed no voters three hours before the 2 pm deadline for closing of voting.

Early report shows that in GRA Asuta Ward 01 Kabba, APC had 254 while PDP had 95. But in the same town, Polling Unit 002, Asuta Ward, located at Town Hall saw the Smart Adeyemi Cole of the All Progressives Congress (APC) had 48 while PDP had 98.

However, reports from the affected 53 polling units in the Kogi West Senatorial Zone and 22 polling units for Ajaokuta Federal Constituency election, say it will be a walkover for the candidates of the APC, when the final results are collated.
